Oh No She Didn't!
This past week there were some problems in women's NCAA basketball. The Baylor Lady Bears were playing the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and two post players were fighting for position. The one on offense was Brittney Griner for the Baylor Lady Bears, and the one on defense was Jordan Barncastle. Jordan's arm got wrapped around Brittney's, and instead of sliding it out, Jordan tried to flip her. The problem with this is that Brittney is not your average player. Brittney is known for her dunks on YouTube, and 25 blocks in a single game in high school. Oh ya, and I forgot to mention she is an athletic 6'8"! Lets just say that the flipping didn't go over too well, especially when all 6'8" of her punched Jordan right in the face in retaliation. Jordan's nose swelled up and bled a little, while Brittney was ejected from the game. The clip of this punch was all over the news. I watched ESPN that night and saw it on the high lites several times. Jordan ended up with a broken nose, and could be out for the rest of the season, and Brittney ended up with a 2 game suspension. If you ask me, a two game suspension is nothing. There have been many other incidents like this in men's sports, like the Oregon football incident. In this case, a player punched another and he was suspended for the whole season. The media was all over that incident also, saying that the suspension of a year was too much. Personally I feel that 4 games should have been her minimum suspension. I think 2 games was way to short, and a year is far too long, especially since Jordan started the whole problem by trying to flip her, due to frustration. One thing I noticed with this, is that men's sports are in the media far more than women's. This is sad, because woman have just as exciting games at times as the men. Sure the men have physical advantages that make their sports more exciting, but the scores come down to the last minute just as often as men. Overall, I think the media handled this incident very well, but I feel that they should cover more women's sports.

This was a very hot topic in the last week. I do agree with Isaac, when he says a 2 game suspension is nothing. Two games is not very long especially in basketball when they play around two games a week. There is absolutely no reason at all in order for her to do that to the other team member. There is many times in which players get caught up or tangled up. There is a point in which a player needs to control himself/herself.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the two game suspension being a vary mild punishment. Basketball season is one of the longest seasons and has many games. Just as Rylan said, they have about 2 games in a week. Basketball is a very physical and competitive sport. Every one should and can control their own body and temper though. You know when you need to calm down or when you need to stop what you are doing. Especially being in college basketball and an icon for younger athletes she should have some morals and enough sense, both girls that is, not to let their anger get the best of them in a game.
ReplyDeleteI actually saw this girl’s punch on ESPN! I could not believe it when I saw it. I am very surprised that she is not getting suspended for much longer than she is. Lately I have seen this punch on many news channels. It is not shocking that the media would pick up this story because it is so shocking. We will be seeing this punch for a long time to come. I think women’s college basketball should have used a harsher punishment, so this type of event will never happen again. I bet the media will criticize the harmless punishment.
