Lil Wayne in Big Trouble
I recently signed into my MSN Messenger, and checked out a couple of the top stories. The one that caught my eye was an article on Dwayne Carter Jr. also known as Lil Wayne. I am sure most of you have heard of him, but just in case you haven't, here are a few of his best songs: A Milli, On Fire, and Lollipop. He is also a featured artist in many rap and even rock songs like Let It Rock. Because he is a rap artist, he acts like he is a gangster in his music videos, even though he may not have grown up with a rough life like most gangsters do. Not too long ago, he was trying to bring what he does in music videos to real life, when he was charged for gun possession and he plead guilty with a sentence of one year in jail on New York's Rikers Island Prison. Going to prison definitely not the most fun time in the world, and it definitely sucks. Lil Wayne was just worrying about serving his time, when one of the creators of one of his most famous songs (lollipop) decided to make his life even more miserable. It turns of that the producer did not receive any royalties from Lil Wayne's Grammy winning song. He is going to sue Lil Wayne for around five hundred thousand dollars. He is also fighting allegations about him sampling a song called "Once" by Karma Swanepole, in his own track "I Feel Like Dying. Just in case that was not enough, Darius 'Deezle' Harrison and music publishers at The Royalty Network have filed a multi-million dollar suit over royalties from "Mrs. Officer", another one of his more famous songs. Overall, Lil Wayne is in some Big Trouble, and it is surprising to me that it takes this much for the media to finally catch his attention. I am not a huge fan of him, but I do enjoy hearing his songs occasionally on the radio, and it is weird to me that he did not get much attention from the media when he was put in jail, as if it is no big deal or surprise that a rapper would be going to prison. It seems to me that the media did not care until there were arguments, and millions of dollars involved. Maybe if he would not have admitted he was guilty he would have gained more attention, but who knows.

Personally, I have always liked Lil’ Wayne’s music. However, I hate to hear about him on these kinds of terms although I think it is good that the public hears it. It is incredibly sad that he is going through all of this but I feel he kind of brought it all on himself. He is a celebrity but I do not feel he has the right to get away with everything because he is one. I am glad to hear that he is suppose to be going to jail to do some time for his actions. The only thing that really bothers me is that all this bad misfortune is happening all at once. The songs that he has produced are very unique, but to wait this long after he made the song ‘lollipop’ to get sued is ridiculous. I used to listen to that song years ago, why wait this long to go after him for not giving proper credit. To not give the producer credit is horrible but this should have been dealt with a long time ago.
ReplyDeleteI am very surprised to hear about this story. I had not heard anything in the media about Lil’ Wayne being in any type of trouble. From this blog it sounds like he has got himself into a pretty bad situation. I am baffled that it took this long for the media to pick up on this story considering how famous he is. I’m actually pretty happy the media didn’t pick up on it though because it seems like they only like reporting bad things. It would be nice if the media covered the good things people do more.
ReplyDeleteThis story is rather shocking, because I have not heard about Lil' Wayne getting put into prison. I'm not much of a listener myself, but he does act gangster all the time. I haven't listened to much of his music, but Lollipop. He somewhat put himself into this trouble and seserved it. Why wasn't it shared throughout the media? It must have not been much importance.
ReplyDeleteI never knew he even went to jail already. I find it that the media picks only want they think people want to know about but I feel that a lot of the time, we do not even care about what the media puts out there. This is a big issue, pleading guilty to gun possession and on top of that, being sued for millions because of not placing royalties on certain producers. Hopefully this news article will open peoples eyes to see that even so called "gangsters" get into trouble.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoy listening to Lil' Wayne's songs every once in a while. I had heard that he had to go to jail but I never knew why he went to jail. I believe that he isn't the only rapper or "gangster" that carries guns around to make their music video real. He is the only one that I have heard that has been in serious trouble for gun possession and maybe people will realize there are more gangster rappers out there.
ReplyDeleteI listen to alot of rap and i pay attention to the rap industry, gun charges happen all the time and it does not surprise me at all. TI recently just got out of jail due to a gun charge. But Lil Wayne not paying his royalties does catch me by surprise i mean the guy has so muhc money he doesnt know what to do with it.Since he one of the most listened to artists in the world.
ReplyDeleteI, like many others that have blogged be for me on this article, do enjoy Lil Wayne's music and the talent that he has exhibited, but I have had some mixed feelings for the image he protrays. I did here about this story in its early stages on some kind of special on MTV, did not realize that he was actually convicted. Like so many rappers before him this seems to be the way of life. Individuals have ended up being in these situations due to lack of attention to what is going around them, because they are caught up in the past. I believe at the time he recieved his Grammy his mother/manager passed away which may have been some cause for not paying his royalties. Despite his hardships I will be curious to see how big of a hit his next album will be once it is out of jail, especially if the media is now picking up on the story.
